“Utterly Meaningless”

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.

“Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

Ecclesiastes 1:2

The passage above is the opening statement of Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes. “Everything is meaningless”. His statement is reality. There are many today that believe this statement, but don’t see that there is hope in the midst of the all that is meaningless. There is hope. That hope is Jesus the Christ. He brings hope to a meaningless existence.

We don’t have to look far to see the desperation of people that can only see life as meaningless, and without hope. All the addictions prove the meaninglessness, that people seek to escape. They overdose, they forfeit everything, they lose their lives because they only see the meaninglessness of life. They don’t see the hope. They seek but cannot find what they are looking for. They don’t know what it is, they are actually seeking…  “He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11b They don’t see GOD as the answer to the meaninglessness. They seek meaning in escape.

The answer they seek eludes them, because the answer is obedience. This is the answer…  “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

Hope is found, eternity is found, in obeying God’s commandments. As Jesus said: “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

We must help them see that Jesus is the answer. He is hope, He is eternity! Following Him in obedience is the answer.
