When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
We should be forever thankful for Jesus compassion on the sheep without a shepherd. Without Jesus all people are like sheep without a shepherd. The people that Jesus had compassion for in this passage were his own covenant people. Even with all the “leadership” Israel had they were without a shepherd to guide them in the right and safe path.
They were being led by too many bemused bellwethers. Their lead sheep; the priests, pharisees, sadducees, and scribes were leading the flock of Israel astray. Jesus came to lead His sheep in the right way. Jesus said this about some of the lead sheep; “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” (Matt. 23:2-3) Jesus was a true shepherd of His sheep, He practiced what He preached.
Today, we as HIS sheep are led by a compassionate Shepherd. He is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. Following HIM we are on the path headed home for safe and green pastures.
