“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
As Jesus preached his sermon on the mount, this is part of what he told his people, “you are the light of the world”. He was reminding his people that they had a purpose in God’s plan. They were to let their light shine before the entire world for the purposes of bringing glory to God. It was a reminder of what God’s chosen people were to be to the world surrounding them. A reminder because they had forgotten a huge part of their purpose.
Today we as believers and followers of Jesus are God’s chosen people, a holy nation in an unholy world with the same purpose. We too are to let our light shine and bring glory to our heavenly Father. We are to shatter the darkness of this world with the light of the Lord. May we never forget this huge part of our purpose.
Every day we have the opportunity to let our light shine. May we always take that opportunity seriously and act on it. May our thoughts, actions, and words be godly. May our lives show that we have been with Jesus. May our good works bring glory to God. Let’s purpose in our hearts to reflect Jesus to the world every day.
Let’s never forget that our citizenship is in heaven. May we be good citizens in whatever neighborhood find ourselves in here in the world. Let’s shine for the world to see. Let’s not get dragged into the bitterness of the world around us, but be children of light.
