My son, listen to your father when he corrects you, and don’t ignore what your mother teaches you. What you learn from your parents will bring you honor and respect, like a crown or a gold medal.
Proverbs 1:8-9 (ERV)
Oh the wisdom of Solomon, listen to your father and don’t ignore your mother. Godly parents have so much to offer their children, but the children must learn to listen. When a parent bases their life on the teachings found in God’s word the wisdom they share is of great value and worth pursuing.
When this wisdom is applied to ones life it is evident to all that good parenting is behind it. Living according to godly teachings and influence produces an individual worthy of honor and respect.
Solomon encourages the reader to listen and learn what is of real value in this world. He says to learn these things, and live them out is like wearing a crown or medal that causes others to respect you. A godly life causes others to see God in you and wins their respect.
Listening, learning and not ignoring are mentioned in many ways throughout the word of God, that it is obvious that we must take the time to listen, and to learn. Jesus himself said many times; he who has an ear, let him hear.
As parents we must learn God’s ways and live them out for our children to learn from us. As children we must learn to listen and grow. When both parties do their part, respect and honor are the result.
