Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:16 (ESV)
The power of prayer is plain in this verse. Prayer works. James is encouraging righteous people to pray for one another. Pray about the sins confessed to one another. What a thought. Although we sin, in Christ we are righteous. On a certain level, that doesn’t make a bit of sense. But, in Jesus it makes absolute sense.
These prayers offered for one another heal sin sickness. Think of the spiritual health that is gained, when we confess to each other and pray for each other. Improved spiritual health for the individual and the body. Sin isn’t healthy, but confession of it, and prayers offered by our brothers and sisters is healing.
Its interesting, when we are suffering from a bodily ailment we don’t hesitate to tell others about it and seek treatment for it. When it comes to our spiritual ailments we want to keep them to ourselves, and often we don’t seek the treatment we so desperately need.
Isn’t it time that we as disciples of Christ begin to take our spiritual well being as seriously as we do our physical well being? No matter what we do to preserve our bodies, eventually they will fail us and our lives will end. If we don’t pay attention to our spiritual well being, we will not be ready when our bodies fail us and we face eternity.
So, let’s begin to make our spiritual well being our first priority. Confess and pray for one another.
