The Prayer of Faith 1

prayingpraiseIs anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

James 5:13 (ESV)

Wisdom from the brother of Jesus. James short letter is so full of rich wisdom for the believer. James gives his readers the ABC’s of the disciple’s walk. The section on pray in chapter five verses 15-20 is a great reminder of how important prayer is for a disciple of Jesus.

Prayer is to be our default reaction to life’s situations , not our last resort when “all else fails”. If we aren’t praying regularly, we are missing out on the thing that will do us the most good in all situations. Examples of the need for prayer are throughout the the Bible but, from Matthew to Revelation we see how important a role it played in the life of Jesus and those that followed him.

Prayer is  healing, it is comforting, it is encouraging. Prayer is the most valuable tool we have in the disciples tool box. Jesus was sustained by prayer. Paul used prayer for the sake others as well as himself. Answered prayer bolstered the weary. Prayer gives disciples a reason to praise.

Prayer and praise are both forms of communication with our heavenly Father. Both need to be practiced daily. They are not reserved just for Sunday. Our heavenly Father is always available to receive both and to respond to them.

If we want a fuller and richer relationship with God we must make these a part of who and what we are. When we do we will be following in the footsteps of our Savior. His was a life of prayer and praise.
