“Off and wandering”

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:3,4 ESV

The Apostle Paul wrote this in a letter to Timothy in the first century. He was warning Timothy to expect this behavior in his own lifetime. Every generation since has a tendency to look at this as being fulfilled in their day, as though people of past generations were less deluded then they are currently. No, as long as God’s sound teaching has existed man has been seeking to find someone to tell them what they want to hear. Generation after generation has done this and will continue to do this until Jesus comes again.

Just like children we seek the wisdom of our peers rather than the wisdom of our Father. But, man’s wisdom is sorrowly lacking and is ever changing.  Jeremiah said this; I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. Jeremiah 10:23 ESV  The reality is that man’s wisdom is not sufficient to direct us in the way we should go. Man’s way of thinking is morally bankrupt outside of God’s influence.

As lost sheep, we have a tendency to wander off in any direction that catches our attention. We suffer from spiritual “ADD”. So often God’s wisdom only keeps our attention as long as it doesn’t distract us from what we want to do. Once we hear something that piques our attention we are are off and running after it.

So often it is science and philosophy that catches our itching ears. Someone somewhere says that what we are doing is alright and God’s word is all wrong. Many of us want to believe what the world has to say about subjects that are painful to us. If they can sooth our consciences with their ideas we will gravitate toward them despite knowing better. We will believe any false teaching if we listen to it enough times. Joseph Goebbels said this about lies; “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”  There are so many big lies being told today and so many of us our believing them. In doing so we leave behind what is best for us for a lie that will change tomorrow.

We must base our lives and actions on those of Jesus. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews. 13:8 ESV We can know for certain if we look to Jesus for the wisdom we seek we will be richly blessed. Jesus came and lived just like one of us and was tempted just as we are, yet did not sin. He was faithful to his Father’s wisdom and teaching. We too must do the same if we hope to pleasing to God. Everything that man tells us must be measured by God’s word and if it is found lacking we must dismiss it as unhealthy for us on every level. Its time that we turn our ears toward God and listen intently.

Many today claim to be Jesus followers, yet they teach that sin, is not sin. They have fallen for the lies propagated by preachers, teachers, scientist, politicians and philosophers. They have come to believe that the way of man is them and have wandered off into myths. We that still believe in the truth of God’s word must not be silent. We must teach the truth of His word and let it work on the hearts and minds of those that will listen. As Jesus said “let he who has an ear, hear”. Let’s not be silent. Let’s speak God’s mind to the world.

If we are silent we are aiding and abetting the father of lies.
